Task 5

Learning task 5

Design and implement your own learning game OR a type of gameplay in a teaching module in your field. The game should be designed to be played in teaching sessions.

If you are planning a gamification course, make an entire course plan. Images of game play progression, diagrams and explanations of how learning progresses through the game mechanics should be included.

For this task, I have created a game using the Twine game engine, designed to teach some fundamental aspects of storytelling.

The game itself is in the style of a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style narrative game, where the player reads through a story and decides how to act. I didn't want to create much material that would go unseen by a player, so I have deliberately made the plot fairly narrow, meaning that if you choose "wrongly" you are almost immediately guided back onto the right track.

The idea of this game came to me when thinking about one screenwriting exercise from the BFI Education series book on teaching scriptwriting. In that book, the exercise is looking at one of Aesop's fables, The Slave and the Lion, and considering three alternative endings, then asking why they don't work so well, therefore highlighting the importance of logical cohesion in character and narrative events, as well as creating a satisfactory ending.

What I wanted to do was make the same exercise more interactive and spread out some of the choices. I also find the original story slightly dull, so I wanted to jazz that up with a meta-story about gods playing a game with the characters of the story, hopefully making the game more engaging.

I decided to leave out any scoring system as I wanted the game to feel more conversational, like it is when I am teaching. I also didn't include any additional information or links about storytelling as I wanted the game to stand alone for itself and for it's own purpose, but I also consider that it would exist as part of a wider course on storytelling or scriptwriting that would provide all other relevant materials anyway.

You can play the game here.
